Former 'Jampoke' Defendant Saito Claims Not Guilty in Sexual Assault Case Against a Woman

Former 'Jampoke' member Saito Shinji has pleaded not guilty in a Tokyo court, contending that he believed the sexual encounter with a woman was consensual.

The trial of Saito Shinji, a former member of the comedy trio 'Jungle Pocket,' has commenced at the Tokyo District Court, where the defendant is facing charges of sexual assault, including non-consensual sexual intercourse. Saito, 43 years old, stands accused of assaulting a woman in her twenties inside a parked location bus after their first encounter during a television program collaboration scheduled for July 2024. During the hearing, he insisted on his innocence, asserting that he believed the woman had consented to the encounter.

Following the allegations, Saito suspended his public activities in September 2024. His management company, Yoshimoto Kogyo, terminated their contract with him in October after he was officially accused of the crime. These developments have generated significant media attention, reflecting the public's growing concern regarding sexual misconduct and the implications it has for public figures in Japan, particularly in the entertainment industry.

Saito was a founding member of the comedy group 'Jungle Pocket,' which gained prominence after participating in several competitions, including the prestigious 'King of Cont.' Despite their popularity, the recent allegations have cast a shadow over the group and may have lasting effects on the careers of both Saito and his former colleagues. This case highlights ongoing issues of accountability in cases of sexual violence and the complexities involved in consent, especially in the context of power dynamics in the entertainment industry.
