Jeju Air Disaster Special Investigation Team Conducts Search and Seizure at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

The special investigation team formed to investigate the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster conducted a search and seizure at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 13th.

On the 13th, a special investigation team established by the National Police Agency for the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster conducted a search and seizure operation at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The operation commenced at 8:40 AM, targeting the ministry which held responsibility for safety regulations and oversight during the incident. The team's objective was to gather materials related to the response to the disaster, particularly concerning four suspects associated with the Aviation Policy Division and Airport Operations Division at the time of the accident.

The investigation has come under scrutiny recently due to the revelation that victims' remains were left at the disaster site for over a year, sparking public outrage. President Lee Jae-myung expressed a desire for thorough investigations into why the remains were inadequately recovered and why debris was neglected for over a year. However, it is understood that the search and seizure operation was conducted independently of the issues surrounding the recovery of remains.

Following criticism of delays in the investigation, the Police Agency restructured the investigation team to expedite the process. The new special team features specialized personnel, including those from serious incidents investigations, anti-corruption units, and digital forensics, totaling 48 investigators. The team has recently met with family members of the victims, promising to conclude the investigation promptly and achieve results within 90 days.
