'Jeju Air Disaster' Special Investigation Team Conducts Search and Seizure at Busan Aviation Authority and Construction Companies
The special investigation team formed to probe the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster has conducted its first search and seizure operation at two locations, including the Busan regional aviation authority and a related construction company.
The special investigation team under the control of the National Police Agency, established to investigate the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster that occurred in December 2022, has initiated its first search and seizure operation. This search commenced at 9 a.m. on December 12, at two key locations: the Busan Regional Aviation Authority and a construction company involved in developing the Muan International Airport. This operation aims to gather documents related to the airport's construction process, which dates back to its opening in December 1999.
Previously, the investigation team was reorganized and moved from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency to a specialized unit under the National Police Agency. Although 45 individuals were charged with professional negligence resulting in death related to the disaster, none have been formally indicted. The new special investigation unit has met with families of the victims, expressing their commitment to conclude the investigation swiftly and promising to deliver results within ninety days.
The implications of this investigation are significant, as it seeks to hold accountable those responsible for safety oversight and construction quality related to the Jeju Air disaster. The team's pledge to expedite the investigation process reflects the pressure from grieving families and the public for transparency and justice concerning such a tragic event affecting the aviation industry in South Korea.
