Water gushes from the ground for hours after Sabesp pipe is punctured during Line 6-Laranja Metro construction in SP

A construction incident in São Paulo caused a significant water leak after a Sabesp pipe was punctured, resulting in water gushing from the ground for several hours.

In São Paulo, a construction project at the future Santa Marina station of the Metro's Line 6-Laranja accidentally punctured a Sabesp water pipeline, causing a large water leak on Avenida Santa Marina in the Água Branca area on Thursday (12). Video footage captured by a local resident showed water gushing forth with considerable force from the ground in front of the construction site. According to reports, the water continued to flow for at least three hours, forming what resembled a fountain on the street.

The water utility company, Sabesp, confirmed that repairs are underway for the damaged pipeline, with expectations for the work to be completed by the evening of the same day. The construction is overseen by the Linha Universidade concessionaire, which stated that the rupture occurred during landscaping activities at the site. The company indicated that an old potable water pipe was accidentally broken during the construction efforts, contributing to the significant disruption in the area.

This incident underscores the challenges faced in urban infrastructure development, particularly in densely populated areas like São Paulo, where existing utilities can be affected by construction activities. It emphasizes the need for careful planning and coordination between different service providers during major construction projects to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
