VIDEO: Expert warns: spring is the most dangerous time on the roads – ice, motorcyclists and tire changing dilemma
As spring approaches, driving safety becomes a major concern due to changing weather conditions, ice on roads, and the return of motorcyclists.
With the arrival of spring, driving safety experts are emphasizing the need for increased caution on the roads. Jānis Vanks, director of a safe driving school, highlighted in a TV3 program that the transition between seasons, particularly in spring and autumn, is regarded as one of the most perilous times for drivers. Rapid weather changes can lead to unexpected icy patches early in the morning, even when daily temperatures can rise significantly, complicating driving conditions and heightening the risk of accidents for everyone on the road.
The return of motorcyclists after the winter break also adds to the traffic complexities. Drivers may be unaccustomed to seeing motorcycles on the roads during winter months, and motorcyclists themselves might experience a lack of practice after the season break. This combination of factors, along with the unpredictable spring weather, escalates the likelihood of accidents, reinforcing the call for heightened awareness and vigilance from all road users.
In addition to general driving safety, the expert mentioned the appropriate timing for changing to summer tires. As average daytime temperatures hover between seven and ten degrees Celsius, it's an indicator for drivers to start considering the switch to summer tires to improve traction and safety as road conditions change with the warmer weather. The need for proactive measures and greater public awareness regarding safe driving practices during this transitional period is crucial to preventing accidents.
