Court Keeps Fake Doctor Imprisoned Who Used Deceased Partner's CRM During Investigations

A São Paulo court has denied the release of entrepreneur Wellington Mazini, who posed as a doctor using his deceased partner's medical registration number.

The São Paulo Court of Justice has rejected an appeal for the release of Wellington Augusto Mazini Silva, who was arrested for illegally practicing medicine by impersonating Dr. Enrico Di Vaio. This incident occurred in February at a primary health unit in Cananéia, where Mazini allegedly provided medical services using Di Vaio's CRM (Medical Registration) after the latter's death. The court found the defense's request to review a previous habeas corpus ruling to be unfounded.

Investigations revealed that Mazini falsely claimed to have been instructed by the deceased doctor to conduct medical examinations, for which he was promised a payment of R$ 1,500. The case escalated when Mazini reportedly misdiagnosed a patient by claiming to have identified a gallbladder where none existed, leading to the unearthing of the fraud. This alarming incident raises questions about the regulation of medical practices and highlights the crucial need for stringent verification of medical credentials in Brazil.

This incident not only emphasizes the legal repercussions for individuals engaging in medical fraud but also instigates a broader dialogue about the adequacy of existing healthcare regulations. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to ensure that such deceitful actions are met with appropriate penalties, thereby safeguarding public health and confidence in medical professionals.
