Fake Doctor: Justice Evaluates Release of Businessman Who Used CRM of Deceased Partner During Investigations

The São Paulo Court of Justice is considering the release of businessman Wellington Mazini, who was arrested for impersonating a doctor and using the CRM of his deceased partner.

The São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) is currently deliberating on the release request for businessman Wellington Mazini, who was arrested earlier this year for illegally practicing medicine. He impersonated a doctor, Enrico Di Vaio, who was his partner in a clinic and had passed away in February. This comes after an attempt by Mazini's defense to obtain habeas corpus was denied by the court. The case is now under review by a panel of judges in a virtual session.

According to investigations, Mazini utilized his deceased partner's professional credentials to perform medical exams at a Basic Health Unit (UBS) in Cananéia. It was reported that he acted on the instructions of the late doctor and was promised a payment of R$ 1,500 for his services. The fraudulent act came to light when Mazini incorrectly claimed to have examined a patient’s gallbladder, despite the patient lacking the organ, which raised suspicions and led to his arrest.

The case highlights serious issues surrounding medical regulations and the practice of medicine in Brazil, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare professionals may be limited. The court's decision on Mazini's request for freedom could set a precedent for similar cases involving unlawful medical practice, and underscores the importance of stringent enforcement of medical licensing laws to protect public health.
