In a significant rescue operation, nearly 100 tortoises were found and saved from an abandoned house in Conceição do Jacuípe, a town located approximately 27 kilometers from Feira de Santana, Brazil. The operation was carried out by the Instituto do Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos (Inema) in response to a tip-off reporting the presence of the animals on the property. Local municipal authorities, specifically the Secretaria Municipal do Meio Ambiente, also joined the effort to ensure the safe capture and protection of these tortoises, which were found in precarious conditions.

No individuals were present at the abandoned site during the rescue, and neighbors mentioned that the property has been unoccupied for some time. The urgency of this operation underscores the ongoing issues surrounding the illegal possession of wildlife in Brazil. The rescued tortoises were transferred to the Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (Cetas), where they will undergo veterinary evaluation and rehabilitation to ensure their health before being reintroduced into their natural habitat.
