VIDEO: nest with 86 turtles found after residents discover a hatchling on the beach of the North Coast of SP
A nest containing 86 Brazilian green turtle hatchlings was discovered at Paúba Beach in São Sebastião, São Paulo, prompting environmental teams to secure the area for their safety during hatching.
A significant find was reported at Paúba Beach on the North Coast of São Paulo, where residents discovered a hatchling from a Brazilian green turtle nest, leading to the identification of a total of 86 hatchlings. Environmental teams promptly isolated the area to protect the hatchlings during their critical hatching period. The discovery underscores the importance of community awareness and reporting in conservation efforts.
Throughout monitoring efforts, it was noted that, apart from the surviving hatchlings, 15 deceased turtles and 20 unhatched eggs were also found at the site. These deceased turtles and the unhatched eggs have been collected for technical evaluation to better understand the challenges faced by turtle populations in the area. This intervention by local environmental teams highlights the pressing need for conservation measures in coastal regions.
Experts indicated that the mother turtle responsible for laying the eggs has not been located, which is considered normal behavior for this species, as female turtles typically do not remain with their young. The average incubation period for the eggs is around 60 days, drawing attention to the need for ongoing monitoring and protection as these vulnerable hatchlings embark on their journey to survival in their natural habitat.
