Man investigated for harassment on Rio bus gives testimony: 'He recognized himself, but did not talk about the act itself,' says delegate
A man investigated for allegedly masturbating next to a woman on a bus in Rio de Janeiro has testified, acknowledging his presence but refusing to discuss the incident.
The man filmed by a young woman reportedly masturbating beside her on a bus in Rio de Janeiro has provided testimony at the 15th Police District in Gávea. Identified as João Victor Raphael Freitas, he did not interact with reporters as he left the police station. He faces investigation for sexual harassment under Brazilian law, specifically for an act of 'importunação sexual.' During his testimony, Freitas admitted to being on the bus and asking the victim for the time but remained silent regarding the masturbation allegation, stating he would reserve comments for the court.
Delegada Daniela Terra, head of the 15th DP (Gávea), emphasized the seriousness of the charges under Article 215-A concerning sexual harassment. She pointed out that Freitas’ actions not only violated the victim's rights but also disrupted public safety and the freedom of movement for women using public transport. This incident highlights ongoing issues of sexual violence and harassment faced by women in Brazil, particularly in crowded settings like buses.
The police are set to call the victim back for a formal recognition process as part of their investigation. This case reflects a broader societal challenge to address and combat harassment in public spaces, sparking conversations about safety and women's rights in Brazil. It also sheds light on the legal framework surrounding sexual harassment, prompting discussions on necessary reforms to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
