Maranhão Court Convicts Ride-hailing Companies to Organize Airport Embarkation in São Luís
A court in Maranhão has ordered ride-hailing companies Uber, 99, and InDrive to create and organize specific embarkation and disembarkation points at São Luís International Airport.
The Maranhão court has decreed that ride-hailing companies Uber, 99, and InDrive, along with the airport's managing concessionaire, must establish designated areas for passenger pick-up and drop-off at São Luís International Airport. This ruling by the Diffuse and Collective Interests Court specifically emphasizes the need for adequate signage and comprehensive dissemination of information, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards.
Judge Douglas de Melo Martins also mandated that each company pay R$ 200,000 in moral damages to the State Fund for Diffuse Rights, addressing the issues of disorganization and safety highlighted by the Maranhão Institute of Consumer and Citizen Promotion (Procon). The Institute had reported several failures in service delivery, coupled with chaos and conflicts arising between ride-hailing drivers and taxi drivers in the airport vicinity.
This ruling not only seeks to improve the operational standards at the airport but also reflects the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in regulating ride-hailing services amid growing conflicts in transportation sectors. By enforcing these changes, the court aims to enhance passenger safety and streamline the processes at São Luís International Airport, which is essential given the rising dependency on these services during travel.
