Real case of a young woman assaulted by classmates is the theme of a play at the Festival
A play inspired by a real case of violence against a woman in 1980s São Paulo will be featured at the 34th edition of the Curitiba Festival.
The Festival de Curitiba is set to showcase 'Reparação', a play inspired by a case of violence against a young woman in the 1980s in São Paulo. Scheduled for performance on March 31 and April 1 at the Teatro Sesc da Esquina, the production is directed and written by Carlos Canhameiro. It explores the story of a schoolgirl who, after being assaulted by two classmates and subsequently forced to leave her town to give birth, returns years later to reunite with the child's father, stirring emotions related to her past trauma.
The play intricately weaves real testimonies with fictional narratives to delve into the collective memory that surrounds traumatic events. Canhameiro explains that the work involves thorough research, which includes interviewing residents connected to the case, thus ensuring an authentic representation of the events and their aftermath. This approach aims not only to recount the historical context but also to foster discussions on how society remembers such incidents of violence against women.
With themes of family, trauma, and the reconstruction of memory, 'Reparação' tackles significant social issues while also being a poignant artistic endeavor. The play invites the audience to reflect on the past's impact on present relationships and the societal pressures surrounding victims of violence. It emphasizes the importance of storytelling in processing traumatic experiences and highlights a dark chapter of Brazil's history that remains relevant today.
