An overview exhibition of the development of book design opened at the National Library

An exhibition at the Estonian National Library showcases 70 years of book design competitions in Estonia.

An exhibition titled 'Kujundlikud kurvid' has been launched at the Estonian National Library to celebrate 70 years of book design competitions in Estonia, beginning with the first competition held in 1958. Initially, book design focused on printing techniques and aesthetics, with the first round selecting the best books from 1956 and 1957. The exhibition highlights how aesthetic ideals and technical capabilities have evolved over time, reflecting changes in societal values towards what constitutes a beautiful book.

Curator Edith Hermann noted that the competition and exhibition initially emphasized the print industry and polygraphy as means to enhance book design. Early efforts were more about the vocational standards of printing masters, rather than artistic expression. However, a significant shift occurred in the late 1990s due to advancements in printing technology, which opened new avenues for artists to execute their creative visions. This transformation allowed for the integration of more sophisticated design elements, including color printing that was previously limited by technological constraints.

The exhibition serves as not only a reflective look at the past but also a consideration of the ongoing evolution of book design, encouraging visitors to appreciate the artistic and technical progress made in the field. It provides insight into how the design of books is a mirror to the cultural and technological changes in society over the decades, making it an essential visit for those interested in the intersection of art, technology, and literature.
