In Jēkabpils County, thaw and mass restrictions on highways hinder economic activities

Economic activities in Jēkabpils County are severely hampered by thawing conditions and transport weight restrictions on local highways.

In Jēkabpils County, the functioning of agricultural businesses is being significantly disrupted due to poor road conditions, particularly during the thawing periods in spring and autumn. Farmers rely heavily on both municipal and state roads, which often deteriorate under heavy rainfall and thawing conditions. Rolands Tīrumnieks, the manager of 'Kalna Dambrāni', has reported numerous incidents of damaged vehicles and equipment due to crumbling roads and bridges, highlighting the urgent need for road maintenance.

The 'Kalna Dambrāni' farm, engaged in dairy and meat production, faces substantial logistical challenges due to transport mass restrictions imposed during thawing. These regulations not only limit the delivery of animal feed but also complicate other essential operations. Although fresh milk can still be transported, the wet road conditions pose significant risks, leading to accidents. Iveta Tīrumniece, the farm's owner, shared alarming incidents where milk trucks have tipped over while navigating treacherous road edges, resulting in substantial losses.

This situation is not unique to 'Kalna Dambrāni'; other farms in Jēkabpils County are similarly affected, indicating a broader crisis that could impact the agricultural sector's productivity and sustainability in the region. The deteriorating infrastructure and its effects on transportation logistics call for immediate governmental scrutiny and potential action to mitigate these challenges for local agricultural enterprises.
