Ukraine and Romania agree to produce drones
Ukraine and Romania have agreed to collaborate on the production of military drones in a deal signed by their leaders in Bucharest.
On Thursday, Ukraine and Romania finalized an agreement to jointly produce military drones, aiming to enhance their defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions in the region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Romanian Prime Minister Nicuศor Dan signed the deal in Bucharest, which allows for drone production to take place in Romania, leveraging Ukrainian expertise and technical knowledge. This initiative is supported by the EU defense program 'Security for Europe' (SAFE), reflecting a growing collaboration in defense among EU member states in light of recent conflicts.
The signing of this drone production agreement marks a significant step in improving relations between Ukraine and Romania, particularly following the strained ties that existed prior to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Dan noted that the longstanding 'distrust' that had characterized interactions between the two countries is beginning to diminish, thus setting the stage for stronger bilateral cooperation. In addition to the drone project, Zelenskyy and Dan also signed a new energy deal that expands electricity connections between the nations and discussed potential collaborative efforts in oil and gas production in the Black Sea.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed anticipation for approval from the White House regarding a more extensive drone production agreement initially proposed by Ukraine last year. This larger deal aims to encompass various types of drones and air defense systems, and would be instrumental in bolstering Ukraine's military capabilities in response to ongoing security threats. The collaboration underscores an urgent need for defensive innovation and mutual support between countries facing similar challenges in Eastern Europe.
