Hotel chain declared bankrupt fires all employees - operations continue

Primehotels, managing three hotels in Finland, declared bankruptcy but announced that operations will continue despite terminating the contracts of all its employees.

Primehotels, which operates three hotels in Finland including Hotel Rantapuisto in Helsinki, Spahotel Casino in Savonlinna, and Hotel Oscar in Varkaus, was declared bankrupt on Wednesday after filing for bankruptcy earlier in the week. This unexpected move has led to the termination of all its one hundred employees, as mandated by the bankruptcy process. According to the CEO, Eero Nuutinen, it was necessary to terminate the employees as part of the bankruptcy proceedings, but he assured that the operations of the hotels would not cease immediately.

Despite the dire situation, Primehotels confirmed that it aims to continue operations while seeking a new operator to manage the hotels. Nuutinen explained that this decision was made to ensure the continuity of services despite the bankruptcy declaration. He emphasized that after the layoffs, new employment contracts will be offered to staff in order to facilitate the ongoing operations under the bankruptcy estate's management. This approach aims to provide assurance for the future of the hotels and their staff amid the financial upheaval.

The situation reflects broader challenges within the hospitality industry, particularly in light of the recent economic pressures exacerbated by global events. The decision to terminate staff while looking for new management may lead to uncertainty among employees and could impact the local economy in the areas where these hotels operate. The pursuit of a new operator is crucial for sustaining the business and its contribution to tourism in Finland.
