Primehotels, which runs three hotels, files for bankruptcy – the CEO says the hotels will stay open

Primehotels, operating three hotels in Finland, has filed for bankruptcy but intends to keep the hotels open according to the CEO.

Primehotels Oy, the operator of Savonlinna's Spahotel Casino, Varkaus Hotel Oscaria, and Helsinki's Hotel Rantapuisto, has officially filed for bankruptcy at the Helsinki District Court. The company has been in corporate restructuring since autumn 2024, but CEO Eero Nuutinen stated that the restructuring program ultimately failed to achieve sufficient results, with profitability remaining elusive due to ongoing challenges, particularly those exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nuutinen pointed out that the company's business struggles intensified six years ago with the pandemic's impact, which saw the hotel industry plunging into a deep crisis. Despite hints of recovery at times, the demand for hotel accommodations in Helsinki has remained significantly low, indicating that the sector is still facing considerable challenges. This ongoing situation raises concerns about the long-term viability of hotel operations in the area and the wider implications for local employment and tourism.

Despite filing for bankruptcy, Nuutinen reassured that the intention is to keep the hotels open. However, this is contingent upon the decisions made by the future trustee of the bankruptcy estate. The persistence in continuing operations suggests a strategy aimed at maintaining employment and service to customers while navigating the complex bankruptcy proceedings, highlighting the difficulties faced by businesses in the hospitality sector during challenging economic times.
