Despite programs to reduce queues, demand for appointments and surgeries grows in RS
Demand for surgical and consultation appointments is increasing in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, despite the implementation of several health programs.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the problem of long waiting lists for consultations and surgeries in the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) has worsened. Recent data released by RBS TV through the Freedom of Information Law indicates a significant rise in the queue for surgeries, increasing from 203,000 patients in December to 219,000 in February 2025. Similarly, the waiting list for consults has also gone up slightly, with requests increasing from 620,000 to 625,000 in the same timeframe. This situation suggests that healthcare demand continues to outstrip capacity, despite regional efforts to address issues in the healthcare system.
