In Parliament - important vote on sanctions against Russian and Belarusian citizens: the project has overcome the first hurdle
Lithuanian Parliament approved the initial legislation to extend sanctions against Russian and Belarusian citizens for another 18 months.
On Thursday, Lithuanian lawmakers approved the Foreign Ministry's proposed amendments to existing sanctions against Russian and Belarusian citizens at the initial stage, allowing the necessary committees to further discuss the bill. The proposed legislation suggests extending the current sanctions for an additional 18 months, maintaining strict regulations concerning residency permits, visa issuance, and electronic resident status for citizens of Russia and Belarus. This will also continue the ban on Russian citizens crossing the EU's external borders, with additional assessments for risks upon arrival.
As part of the ongoing sanctions, Russian citizens without residency permits in Lithuania are expected to maintain their prohibition on acquiring real estate, and there will be restrictions on transporting Ukrainian hryvnias, along with a ban on importing agricultural products and feed originating from Russia and Belarus. These measures underline Lithuania's commitment to preventing any economic engagement that could support the regimes of Moscow and Minsk, especially amidst ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine.
The parliamentary discussion reflects Lithuania's firm stance on sanctions as a tool of foreign policy and may influence other EU countries' approaches to dealing with similar issues. The bill’s progression through necessary committees and its eventual approval could send a strong diplomatic message against any perceived aggressions by Russia and Belarus, reinforcing unity within the EU regarding sanctions against these nations.
