Half the UK's chocolate gifts are sent to Mums for Mother's Day

Half of the chocolate gifts sent in the UK are for Mother's Day, with a significant amount of Mother's Day gifts including chocolates and cards.

A new report reveals that mothers in the UK are the primary recipients of chocolate gifts, with 41 tonnes of chocolate gifted specifically for Mother’s Day. This staggering amount of chocolate is equivalent to the weight of a blue whale, illustrating the strong preference for chocolate among gift-givers during this holiday. In addition, Mother's Day sees an impressive volume of cards and flowers sent, with 85% more cards being exchanged than on Valentine’s Day and twice as many flowers delivered to mothers compared to lovers.

Further insights from Moonpig, who commissioned research on gifting habits, indicate that mothers are not only the recipients of gifts but are also the most active gift givers. On average, mothers send out an impressive 13 cards and 15 gifts annually, contributing significantly to the overall gifting culture in the UK. Interestingly, the data reveals that one in four cards sent throughout the year is addressed to mothers, emphasizing their importance in the gifting landscape. This trend highlights the societal emphasis placed on honoring mothers, particularly during special occasions like Mother’s Day.

The findings paint a picture of the evolving gifting preferences in the UK, marking a shift in how people value and prioritize gifting for mothers compared to other family members. As Valentine's Day celebrates romantic partnerships, Mother's Day appears to focus more on familial love and appreciation for maternal figures. This distinctive approach underscores the unique cultural significance of Mother's Day in the UK, leading to a dedicated segment of the gifting economy centered around mothers and their roles in families.
