What mums really want this Mother’s Day revealed - and it’s surprisingly inexpensive

A recent study reveals that many mothers in the UK prefer receiving phone calls or spending time with their children over expensive gifts for Mother's Day.

A new study has highlighted that what mothers in the UK truly desire this Mother's Day is not extravagant gifts but rather meaningful conversations and quality time with their children. Research indicates that a significant majority of mothers (80%) would choose a simple phone call or a coffee catch-up over an expensive present. Interestingly, despite the stereotype of millennials being less communicative, many young adults are increasingly making the effort to connect with their mothers through phone calls.

The data also shed light on how often young Brits reach out to their mothers, revealing that individuals in their early 30s typically call their mums five times a week, with an impressive two-fifths of respondents reaching out at least once daily. The average call duration exceeds an hour, suggesting that these conversations are not just routine check-ins but rather meaningful exchanges that mothers eagerly anticipate. The preferred time for these calls is reported to be 10 am, indicating a trend towards morning communication.

Interestingly, the study also pointed out geographical variations in call durations, with data showing that conversations in Wolverhampton last an average of only 34 minutes, contrasting sharply with Middlesbrough, where calls can extend to over an hour. These findings highlight the importance of parental connections and illustrate how a focus on emotional connections over material gifts can shape relationships, especially around significant occasions like Mother’s Day.
