The government supported the language requirement for conscripts

The Estonian government has approved a proposal requiring conscripts to have a B1 level proficiency in the Estonian language starting from 2027.

On Thursday, the Estonian government endorsed a draft amendment to the Defense Forces Act initiated by the national defense committee. The proposed legislation stipulates that beginning in 2027, proficiency in the Estonian language at a B1 level will be a prerequisite for individuals entering conscription. This change is aimed primarily at enhancing the security of conscripts and improving the combat readiness of military units.

Defense Minister Hanno Pevkuri emphasized the importance of this measure, stating that the ability to communicate effectively in Estonian is crucial for ensuring the safety of conscripts during their service. As military operations often demand quick decision-making and coordination among troops, a common language becomes essential for operational efficiency and effectiveness in real-world situations.

This move also reflects the broader societal goal of promoting the Estonian language among younger generations and integrating all citizens into the national defense structure. By raising the language proficiency requirement, the government not only aims to ensure a capable military force but also to foster a stronger sense of unity and identity amongst service members, thereby enhancing national cohesion.
