Ian Huntley's alleged killer appears in court
Anthony Russell, charged with murdering Ian Huntley in prison, appeared in court but did not enter a plea.
Anthony Russell, 43, was presented in a preliminary hearing at Teesside Crown Court via videolink from HMP Frankland, where he is currently incarcerated. The court appearance stemmed from charges against him for the alleged murder of Ian Huntley, a notorious child killer who was serving a life sentence for the murders of two ten-year-old girls in Soham in 2002.
Huntley was reportedly assaulted in maximum-security jail on February 26, 2026, and subsequently died in hospital a few days later. During the brief hearing on March 12, 2026, Judge Francis Laird KC noted that Russell confirmed his identity but did not enter a plea. The case has been scheduled for further proceedings, with a pre-trial preparation hearing set for April 24.
The incident raises significant discussions regarding the safety of high-profile inmates in prison settings. With Huntley being a figure of considerable public outrage due to his crimes, the circumstances of his murder and the implications it has on prison security and management of violent offenders are likely to be scrutinized in the upcoming proceedings.
