Prisoner charged with murder of Soham killer Ian Huntley

Anthony Russell has been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley, a notorious child killer, who died after an assault in prison.

A 43-year-old inmate at HMP Frankland in County Durham, named Anthony Russell, has been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley, who was convicted in 2002 for the murders of two young girls, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. The incident occurred on February 26, when Huntley was attacked with a metal pole in a prison workshop. Following the assault, he was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries on March 7.

Durham constabulary reported that emergency services responded to the scene promptly after the assault was reported, leading to Huntley's immediate transportation to the hospital. Despite medical attention, Huntley could not survive the severe injuries inflicted during the assault. His murder conviction turned him into a significant figure in British media, and his death has reignited public and media interest in his past crimes and the lives of his victims' families.

Anthony Russell's court appearance via video link is scheduled for March 11, where he will face magistrates. The nature of the charges and the circumstances surrounding the incident raise questions about prison safety and the handling of inmates convicted of serious crimes in facilities where they might be vulnerable to violence from other inmates.
