Students waited over an hour for exam to start, assistant principal puzzled: 'Everything was basically right'
A high school exam in Valkeakoski, Finland, saw students waiting more than an hour due to technical issues, causing frustration and anxiety among students.
The recent high school exam in the Finnish language and literature successfully took place in most high schools without technical failures; however, students at Valkeakoski's Tietotien high school faced a significant delay. The exam was delayed by almost 75 minutes due to a server issue identified just before the exam was scheduled to start. Students were confined to their seats, only allowed to leave for bathroom breaks with the exam supervisor present, which added to their discomfort during the extended wait.
The exam officially commenced at 10:13 AM, contrary to the normal start time, resulting in an unusual end time of 4:13 PM or even later at 6:13 PM for those granted extra time. This meant that students who took the full length of the exam were seated for over an hour longer than anticipated. Students expressed that this disruption created an atmosphere of nervousness and frustration, which may have negatively impacted their performance.
This situation raises questions about the reliability of the examination system, particularly about how technical issues can significantly affect students' experiences. The assistant principal acknowledged the challenges posed, stating that the procedures were essentially correct but were evidently hindered by the unexpected technological problems. This incident might prompt further evaluations of contingency plans in case of such delays in future examinations.
