The roof renovation of Pori Ice Hall carries a staggering price tag – a new steel roof would cost 25 million euros

The renovation of the aging roof of Pori Ice Hall is projected to cost around 25 million euros for a new steel structure, significant for local sports and community use.

The Pori Ice Hall is facing a significant financial decision regarding its aging roof, which has reached the end of its useful life. According to a report by Kiinteistö Oy Porin Jäähalli, replacing the current glulam beams would cost approximately 21 million euros excluding value-added tax. In comparison, converting the roof to a steel structure would raise the total cost to about 25 million euros. For context, a recent renovation decision for a rink in Rauma, which also includes an expansion, was set at roughly 20 million euros, highlighting the financial challenges facing local sports facilities.

In addition to the major roof repairs, both renovation options entail the replacement of the entire building automation system. Essential systems such as locks, access control, telecommunications, and surveillance cameras will also require upgrades. This adds another layer of complexity to the renovation, as stakeholders must weigh the immediate costs against the long-term benefits of improved facility management and security.

The timeline for commencement of these renovation efforts is projected for two years from now. Alongside the roof replacements, the plans include additional options aimed at enhancing the functionality of the arena, ensuring that it continues to serve its community effectively. As these deliberations unfold, they highlight the pressing need for sustainable funding and improved infrastructure to support local sports and activities in Pori.
