The renovation of Isomäki ice hall's rink will cost a fortune – Pori taxpayers will be able to lend money to the hall company
The Isomäki ice hall in Pori is in urgent need of renovations, particularly the replacement of its ice rink, for which the city is considering a substantial loan.
The Isomäki ice hall, home to the Pori Ässät hockey team, is facing multiple renovation needs, with the ice rink replacement being the most pressing issue. The Isomäki ice hall company has approached the city council for a preliminary evaluation on whether a loan of nearly 1.6 million euros could be secured to fund the rink's renovation. This request is somewhat procedural since the city of Pori owns the ice hall company.
The current flexible ice rink is reportedly at the end of its usable life and requires replacement primarily for safety reasons. The new rink would feature LED technology, which is expected to enhance advertising opportunities and increase revenue. In addition to the rink replacement, the flake covers used during events would also be replaced, as these are essential for hosting concerts and other activities within the hall. The total cost of the replacements is estimated at around 1.57 million euros, with the installation planned for next summer.
City Mayor Lauri Inna is advocating for the approval of the loan to support the hall company, underscoring the importance of the ice hall to the community and the need to ensure its operational readiness for future events. The financial implications for Pori taxpayers may be significant, depending on the terms of the loan and the potential return on investment from increased events and revenues at the ice hall.
