Minija River near Kartena rose more than half a meter in a day

Residents observed the Minija River swelling significantly, with a rise of 57 cm recorded in one day, although it has not yet overflowed its banks.

On Thursday, locals witnessed the Minija River near Kartena rising notably, with hydrometeorological reports indicating a 57 cm increase in water level within just one day. Despite the swelling waters, local mayor Alina Jonutienė remarked that the river has not yet overflowed its banks, suggesting that the situation is still manageable. She attributed the rise to the onset of significant snowmelt, with excess water naturally flowing into the river, although she refrained from predicting when the water might eventually overflow.

The Minija River has been flowing rapidly in the Kartena area, with ice observed only sporadically along the banks and in wooded areas. Residents have been closely monitoring the river's status, and many believe that the river may start to overflow its banks as early as Friday, indicating their growing concern about potential flooding. Meanwhile, further downstream near Lankupiais, the water level has risen by only 20 cm, suggesting variability in the river's conditions across different segments.

Overall, the hydrological situation remains dynamic, with continued rising water levels in Leitės near Kūlymai, albeit at a slower pace. Authorities and residents alike will need to remain vigilant as spring progresses and the melting snow continues to impact river conditions in the region.
