airBaltic will need additional money. Where to get it?
airBaltic continues to operate at a loss and is seeking additional funding to address its financial challenges.
airBaltic is facing significant financial challenges, reporting a loss of 44.3 million euros in the previous year, despite a slight increase in passenger numbers and a 7% rise in total flights. The airline has shifted its strategy regarding its planned initial public offering (IPO), no longer considering it a viable source of capital for this year, as highlighted in the company's annual report.
The airline anticipates operating with a negative cash flow this year and estimates that it will require an additional 100 to 150 million euros for financing operations in the upcoming winter season. Investment banker Girts Rungainis noted that addressing these financial issues will be particularly challenging given the current pre-election atmosphere in Latvia.
Despite these struggles, the aviation sector contributes over a billion euros annually to Latvia's economy, with Riga serving as a critical hub for flights within the Baltics and connecting to a wide range of destinations. The need for airBaltic to secure additional funding raises important questions about the future sustainability of the airline within this evolving economic landscape.
