Television: Grimme Prize: Golineh Atai Receives Special Award, Honor for Frank Elstner

The Grimme Prize winners for 2026 have been announced, highlighting significant contributions in German television journalism and culture.

The Grimme Institute in Marl has announced the winners of the 2026 Grimme Prizes, with a total of 16 awards and three special prizes being distributed. This prestigious recognition honors exceptional work in television and journalism, underscoring the importance of media within German society. Golineh Atai, currently the head of the ZDF foreign studio in Cairo, has received the award for 'Special Journalistic Achievement' for her insightful and analytical reporting from the Arab world.

In a notable tribute, Frank Elstner, a former television host and showmaster, was also honored with a special distinction from the German Adult Education Association this year. This award recognizes his substantial contributions to television entertainment in Germany over the years. Additionally, the category for Information & Culture saw its first award going to private broadcaster RTL 2 for the two-part series 'Hate.Hate.Hope,' which tackles pressing social issues.

Other notable awards include documentary films 'The Empty Grave' (ZDF), 'Petra Kelly – Act Now!' (ARD/ARTE), and 'Sudan: A Hospital in the Shadow of War' (ZDF/DW/ARTE). In the Fiction category, the jury selected the TV films 'The Policeman's Niece' (ARD) and the Frankfurt 'Tatort' episode titled 'Darkness.' These awards reflect the diverse storytelling and critical engagement with contemporary issues within the German television landscape, showcasing both local and international narratives.
