‘Resistance and Reflection’… A Knowledgeable Person's Record of Resistance to Yoon Seok-yeol's Insurgency

A new book details the resistance of a prominent figure against the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's authoritarian actions since its inception.

Kim Young, co-representative of the Civil Society Network for Democracy, recently released a book titled ‘Resistance and Reflection’, documenting his fight against what he describes as an insurgence by President Yoon Seok-yeol’s government since its establishment in 2022. The book captures his immediate reaction last December when he, along with his wife, physically blocked military vehicles from entering the National Assembly upon hearing news of a state emergency being declared.

The compilation includes writings that Kim has shared over the past four years on platforms like Facebook and the citizen media outlet 'Mindale.' It highlights his public statements as a leading figure in the democratic movement, as well as his contemplative commentary on significant literary works and political critiques. This book serves not only as a historical document but as a reflective piece encouraging readers to engage deeply with issues surrounding democracy and justice in South Korea.

In the preface, Kim emphasizes the idea that “once someone has tasted freedom, they cannot endure tyranny.” He asserts his commitment to ongoing resistance against injustice while also engaging in introspection, thereby showcasing the intertwining of activism and philosophical reflection in his approach to the current political climate in South Korea. His work underscores the urgent need for civic involvement in defending democratic values against perceived authoritarianism.
