Mobile phones banned in schools up to 9th grade
Latvia will implement a ban on mobile phone usage in schools for students up to the 9th grade starting June 1, 2026, to enhance students' concentration and reduce risks related to digital emotional abuse.
The Latvian government has finalized amendments to the Education Law that will extend the ban on mobile phones in schools, previously limited to grades 1-6, to include all students up to 9th grade starting from June 1, 2026. This decision aims to address concerns over the negative impact of mobile phone usage on students’ cognitive abilities and to mitigate the risk of digital emotional abuse among schoolchildren.
Agita Zariņa-Stūre, the chairperson of the Education, Culture, and Science Committee responsible for advancing the bill, emphasized that the legislation sends a clear message to educational institutions to limit the aimless use of mobile phones. Studies indicate that even the mere presence of a personal mobile phone, when turned off, can adversely affect a person's cognitive performance. Hence, the move is seen as critical to improving student focus during lessons.
As schools brace for this change, it is anticipated that the ban will foster a better learning environment. The regulation reflects a growing trend in education to create spaces where technology does not distract from educational goals, ensuring that the mental well-being and academic success of students are prioritized in Latvian schools.
