Two drafts regarding light vehicles reach the Riigikogu
The Riigikogu is set to consider two draft laws aimed at regulating the use of light vehicles for safety reasons.
The Riigikogu will soon begin deliberations on two draft laws intended to modify traffic laws concerning the use of light vehicles and mopeds, with the objective of reducing accidents related to these vehicles. The first draft was introduced by Anastassia Kovalenko-KΓ΅lvart, a member of the Center Party faction, and a similar draft is expected to be sent for consultation by the Ministry of Climate in the upcoming weeks. The legislation seeks to establish fundamental regulations such as age restrictions and the necessity for a bicycle license.
Kovalenko-KΓ΅lvart highlighted the absence of basic requirements in the current law, stating that elements like age limits and the verification of cycling permits are not yet regulated. In addition, if approved, local municipalities would gain the authority to impose restrictions on the number of rentable light vehicles, mopeds, and bicycles allowed within their territories. This move addresses concerns raised by local governments regarding the difficulty of regulation at the local level, alongside the policing challenges faced by the police and border guard.
These legislative proposals come amid increasing incidents involving light vehicles, emphasizing the need for clear safety standards and regulations. They reflect a broader recognition of the challenges posed by the rising popularity of light vehicles in urban areas and the necessity for coordinated local and national efforts to enhance road safety. The outcomes of these proposals could lead to significant changes in how light vehicles are managed, reflecting the urgent calls for safety and regulation from the community.
