Opening of the Seoul City Museum in Geumcheon-gu... First Introductions on a Shocking Performance Stage
The new Seoul City Museum, located near the Geumcheon-gu Office Station, opened with a striking performance rather than a traditional exhibition.
The Seoul City Museum, the first public art museum in the southwestern region of Seoul, opened on September 12 with extravagant performances rather than conventional art exhibitions. Located just 200 meters from the Geumcheon-gu Office Station, the opening event featured a sound art performance by the electronic music duo Gray Code and a multi-sensory live performance titled "World" choreographed by Hwang Su-hyun, captivating the audience's senses with a mix of dance and sound art. The museum, situated within the former military base site now transformed into Geumnarae Central Park, aims to be a specialized institution for new media art, including video, sound, and performance art. The opening performances are part of an ongoing art project titled "Breath," which will showcase works by 27 teams of artists, including choreographers and visual artists, emphasizing the integration of various forms of art. This innovative approach positions the museum to engage the community and redefine public art experiences in the area. Designed by architect Kim Chan-jung, the museum spans 7,186 square meters, with two basement levels and one ground floor, emphasizing accessibility for the community. The design encourages visitors to naturally progress from the grass gardens surrounding the museum to the main entrance where they can engage with art performances and exhibitions. Additionally, a rooftop garden has been incorporated for visitors to relax while enjoying views of the park after experiencing the museum's offerings.
