Shogi Eiou Tournament: Shintaro Saito Wins Challenger Rights, First Match in Singapore
Shintaro Saito won the challenger rights for the 11th Eiou Shogi Tournament, with the first match scheduled to be held in Singapore.
Shintaro Saito, an eighth-dan shogi player, secured his position as the challenger for the 11th Eiou Tournament after defeating Takumi Itou in a decisive match held at the Shogi Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo. This victory marks his second consecutive challenge for the title, previously held by the reigning champion, 23-year-old Takumi Ito, who currently holds two titles. Following the tender moments of the game, particularly in the 'kakugawari' opening, Saito emerged victorious in a tightly contested match that showcased his chess-like strategic thinking.
The five-match tournament is set to commence in Singapore on April 3, following last year's intense battle that saw Saito and Ito extend to a dramatic fifth game. During the previous series, both players pushed their time limits to the edge, resulting in a tense showdown of one-minute shogi, though Saito was unable to secure the title. With this upcoming challenge, Saito aims to capture his second title in eight years and his first Eiou championship.
Originating from Nara City, Saito became a professional shogi player at 18. He won his first title as a king in 2018 and subsequently aspired to regain his footing by challenging the reigning 'Meijin' title in A class leagues in 2021 and 2022. Despite his efforts, he faced defeats in both challenges. As he heads into this new tournament phase, Saito is keen to break through and establish himself with a prestigious new title, highlighting his development in the competitive world of shogi.
