Science and Education: Munich Universities Remain 'Excellent'

The Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have been awarded the title of 'Excellence University' for the fourth consecutive time.

For the fourth consecutive time, the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have been recognized as 'Excellence Universities' in Germany. This announcement was made by the German Science Council, the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the Federal Ministry of Research in Bonn. They are the only two German universities that have consistently received this award since the inception of the funding program two decades ago.

The 'Excellence Strategy' is an initiative established between the federal government and the states aimed at promoting top-level research and enhancing the international competitiveness of German universities. Since 2016, this program has allocated a total of 533 million euros annually for research clusters and institutional support. The funding helps to foster internationally competitive research projects as well as strengthen the universities that spearhead these initiatives.

To qualify for the title of 'Excellence University', institutions must demonstrate sustained commitment to developing outstanding research and educational capabilities. This recognition not only highlights the universities’ achievements but also underscores Germany's focus on maintaining a leading role in global academic research and innovation.
