After prolonged discussions, LKAB and Kiruna Municipality have reached a decision regarding the future of the old fire station and hospital, which are integral to Kiruna's early history and urban development. The buildings are located within the mining area affected by LKAB operations, and their fate has been under consideration for some time. In 2019, the municipality agreed to relocate them, but rising costs associated with the urban relocation challenge led local politicians to retract responsibility for the move.

Åsa Persson, the city planning manager, highlighted the municipality's inability to fulfill the agreement due to escalating costs and challenges in relocating the structures independently. However, following extensive negotiations, both parties have agreed to maintain the buildings in their original locations for future generations.
