The grid network is being expanded to Kiruna – a joyful announcement for LKAB

LKAB is set to receive increased electrical infrastructure support with the planned construction of high-voltage lines to Malmberget and Kiruna, despite delaying moves towards fossil-free iron sponge production.

LKAB, a key player in Sweden's mining industry, is on the verge of making significant investments in its infrastructure to support its operations, particularly with the construction of a new iron sponge facility in Malmberget as part of the Hybrit project. The Swedish National Grid has initiated plans to build two 400 kV power lines, one from Porjusberget (scheduled for 2026-2029) and another from Messaure (scheduled for 2028-2032), which will directly support LKAB's industrial zone. While the increase in power supply ultimately aims to enhance operations in the region, the company recently announced that its transition to fossil-free iron sponge production in Kiruna will now be postponed until after 2040, emphasizing the need for substantial electrical supply now, regardless of Hybrit.
