During School Events, the Call for 'Respecting Heaven' and Saluting... Human Rights Commission Says 'Refrain from Religious Rituals'
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has recommended refraining from religious rituals at school events to protect students' rights.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) has issued recommendations against incorporating religious meanings into rituals at school events, after determining that such practices could infringe on students' fundamental rights. The commission found that a private middle school in Seoul was making students perform a salute while shouting the phrase 'Respect Heaven', which was considered a violation of their freedom of expression and religion. The issue was raised by a former student who claimed that this practice was continuing to violate current students' rights, prompting the NHRCK to recommend the principal to cease the practice.
