Supreme Court orders the arrest of 5 former members of the DF Military Police leadership convicted for the coup acts of January 8

The Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered the arrest of five former leaders of the Federal District Military Police, who were convicted for their involvement in the coup attempt on January 8.

The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) has issued arrest warrants for five former high-ranking officials of the Federal District Military Police, convicting them for their roles in the January 8 coup attempt against the government. These individuals were sentenced to 16 years in prison, with the court indicating that all possibilities for appeals have been exhausted, affirming the finality of their convictions. The arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing accountability measures following the events of that day, where rioters attempted to disrupt the democratic processes in Brazil.

The five individuals under arrest are Fábio Augusto Vieira, the former commander of the PM; Klepter Rosa Gonçalves, the former deputy commander; Jorge Eduardo Barreto Naime; Paulo José Ferreira de Sousa Bezerra; and Marcelo Casimiro Vasconcelos Rodrigues. After their presentation at the PM's internal affairs body, they underwent examinations at the IML (Instituto Médico Legal) and were then transferred to Papudinha, a high-security prison unit within the Papuda Complex. Notably, this facility also houses other prominent figures linked to the coup attempt, including former president Jair Bolsonaro and other key political figures.

The convictions of these police leaders raise questions about their actions and complicity during the coup attempt, emphasizing the need for accountability in restoring the rule of law in Brazil. As the circumstances surrounding the coup attempt are scrutinized, the involvement of law enforcement personnel at such high levels further complicates the narrative of accountability and justice in Brazil's political landscape.
