Man convicted in RJ for million-dollar scam against INSS is arrested in gypsy camp in ES
A man convicted of defrauding Brazil's social security system was apprehended in a gypsy camp in Espírito Santo after causing significant financial damages.
Roa Soares, a 45-year-old man sentenced by Federal Justice in Rio de Janeiro for committing fraud against the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), was arrested on Tuesday morning in a gypsy camp located in Vila Bethânia, Viana, in Greater Vitória. His arrest followed a tip-off to the Military Police and comes as part of investigations into a criminal scheme in which Soares participated, leading to losses exceeding R$ 1.8 million to governmental funds.
The investigations revealed that Soares and his co-conspirators, including his brother, were involved in fraudulent applications for Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC), aimed at assisting low-income individuals or those with disabilities. Unlike retirement benefits, the BPC does not necessitate prior contributions to the INSS, making it a target for fraudsters seeking to exploit the system.
Utilizing falsified documents, the criminal group allegedly managed to fraudulently secure at least 48 benefits, thereby inflicting considerable financial losses on public resources. The authorities continue to delve into the details of the scheme, highlighting the ongoing issues of fraud within Brazil's social security framework and emphasizing the need for stringent measures to safeguard against similar manipulations in the future.
