Might have to replace ceilings in 540 bathrooms after ceiling panels fell down in new hospital
Around 100 ceiling panels have fallen or loosened in patient bathrooms at the new Stavanger University Hospital since its opening.
Since the opening of the new Stavanger University Hospital (SUS) last November, approximately 100 ceiling panels have either fallen or become loose in patient bathrooms. The hospital is now considering replacing the ceilings, according to Jan Hauge, the head of operational services at the facility. Although there have been incidents where panels have fallen onto individuals, no injuries have been reported so far.
The ceiling panels, measuring about 60 by 60 centimeters and weighing roughly one kilogram, may be relatively light, but they still pose a risk when they fall. The hospital's assessment indicates that while no serious harm has yet occurred, it underscores the need for immediate attention to ensure patient safety. The hospital is currently evaluating the extent of the situation and the potential costs involved in replacing the ceiling panels.
If the decision is made to proceed with the replacements, it will involve around 540 bathrooms throughout the hospital, indicating a significant undertaking that raises concerns about operational disruptions during the renovations. The hospital staff is cautious in their approach, understanding both the urgency and the implications of the necessary repairs on patient care and hospital functioning.
