Ecuador updated its biodiversity strategy and action plan until 2030

Ecuador has updated its national biodiversity strategy and action plan to align with global biodiversity goals and improve tracking of conservation efforts.

Ecuador has made significant updates to its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for the years 2025-2030, which aims to align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This updated strategy includes new national targets and a robust monitoring system featuring 139 indicators designed to measure the country's progress in conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity more accurately. This initiative reflects an evolving approach to environmental preservation in Ecuador, responding to both national and international biodiversity goals.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE) has taken the lead in developing this strategy with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). One of the key focuses of the updated plan is to streamline policies, actions, and efforts directed toward biodiversity conservation and the equitable distribution of benefits arising from the use of biodiversity resources. By reinforcing its commitment to biodiversity, Ecuador aims to enhance its environmental policies, balancing ecological needs with developmental objectives.

Moreover, the strategy is part of Ecuador's broader international obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This comprehensive approach underscores the importance of preserving biodiversity not only for ecological health but also for sustaining local communities that depend on these resources. The focus on a more robust tracking and evaluation system signifies a proactive stance in monitoring advancements in conservation efforts and ensuring accountability for future outcomes.
