Energy company employees are suspected of embezzling more than 2 km of cables in Macapá

Two employees of CEA Equatorial and a property owner were arrested in Macapá for the suspected embezzlement of over two kilometers of electrical cables.

In Macapá, Brazil, over two thousand meters of electrical cables were seized by the Civil Police of Amapá on Tuesday during a raid on a house in the Perpétuo Socorro neighborhood. The investigation led to the arrest of two employees from CEA Equatorial, the local energy concessionaire, along with the owner of the property, who are suspected of being involved in a scheme to divert materials from the company. The cables were discovered stored in deposits at the house, and authorities confirmed that this operation was prompted by irregularities identified by the company itself.

The CEA Equatorial reported that they had initiated the investigation after noticing signs of improper handling of their materials. Their cooperation with the police during the operation was crucial in identifying the location where the stolen cables were held. It's worth noting that despite the theft, CEA assured the public that there was no impact on the energy supply, indicating their ability to maintain service despite these illicit activities.

According to Kleyson Fernandes, the Deputy Chief of the Narcotics Police Department (Denarc), the investigation was launched following community tips that implicated the house as a storage site for stolen cables. During the police action, officers were able to recover more than two kilometers of cables, all traced back to the energy company, underlining the challenges of theft in the utility sector and the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
