Operation arrests 8 suspects and seizes more than half a ton of stolen cables in Fortaleza
A police operation in Fortaleza led to the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of over 621 kilograms of stolen energy cables.
On Wednesday, a joint operation in the Cajazeiras neighborhood of Fortaleza resulted in the seizure of more than half a ton of stolen energy cables. The operation, which involved multiple teams from the Civil Police and Enel Distribuição Ceará, also dismantled connections on 12 utility poles, effectively deactivating an illicit energy network. Among those arrested were five men and three women, all caught in the act of engaging in theft activities related to electrical infrastructure.
The operation's focus was on a community known for its illegal practices and occupation in an Environmental Protection Area (APA). In total, authorities seized 621 kilograms of the stolen cables along with 40 junction boxes designated for exclusive use by Enel, the local energy distributor. The police implemented network shielding measures to hinder further attempts of theft in the area, reinforcing the need for heightened security and surveillance over critical energy infrastructure in urban environments.
This action highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating theft of energy resources and the impact of rapid urbanization in vulnerable areas. The collaboration between public security and private utility companies like Enel is crucial in tackling the ongoing issue of energy theft, which compromises not only safety but also financial stability for utility providers and consumers alike.
