PSOL demands protection for trans women in investigation of center founded by Father Júlio
Federal deputy Erika Hilton and city councilor Amanda Paschoal have requested the São Paulo Public Ministry to consider the welfare of trans women affected by the closure of a community center.
Federal deputy Erika Hilton and city councilor Amanda Paschoal, both from the PSOL party, have approached the São Paulo Public Ministry with updated information concerning the São Martinho de Lima community center in Mooca. This center, founded by Father Júlio Lancelotti, is currently under investigation following its closure, prompting concerns about the resources and support available to its clients. Notably, the center served approximately 250 women in January, including 36 who identified as trans, providing essential meals and services to a vulnerable population.
The closure of the São Martinho de Lima center raises significant questions regarding the future support for the trans women and travestis who were served there. In their petition, Hilton and Paschoal have expressed concerns about the adequacy of alternative facilities offered by the municipal government, specifically citing the Arsenal da Esperança, which provides nighttime accommodation exclusively for men. This essentially leaves the trans women's needs unaddressed, highlighting a potential gap in social support services for this demographic during a time when they are most vulnerable.
The advocates emphasize the need not only for immediate resources but also for tailored services that cater to the specific needs of trans individuals, as the existing shelters may not meet their requirements. This action reflects a growing awareness and advocacy for the rights and safety of trans women in Brazil, particularly in the context of ongoing discussions about social equity and protection for marginalized communities in the country.
