Public Ministry investigates the closure of a center founded by Father Júlio for homeless people
The Public Ministry of São Paulo is investigating the closure of the São Martinho de Lima community center, which provides meals for the homeless, initiated by the municipal government.
The Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP) has opened a civil inquiry to investigate the decision made by the city hall to close the São Martinho de Lima community center, which daily serves 450 meals to homeless individuals in the Mooca neighborhood of São Paulo. The prosecutor Ricardo Manuel Castro has requested that the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes refrain from shutting down the facility until it presents unequivocal evidence justifying the closure within ten days.
This community center has been operating for over 30 years and was founded by Father Júlio Lancellotti, a prominent figure known for his dedication to helping marginalized populations. Although Father Júlio is no longer involved in the center’s administration, his legacy continues to symbolize support for the homeless. The decision to close the center surfaced in a news column published recently, prompting public outcry and scrutiny.
The municipal secretary for Assistance and Social Development, Eliana Gomes, explained that the closure decision was based on a comprehensive study conducted by her department. However, the investigation by the Public Ministry underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in the city's handling of social welfare initiatives, especially for vulnerable populations. The case draws attention to the ongoing struggles of homeless individuals in São Paulo and the critical role that such community centers play in providing essential services.
