Italy has purchased a Caravaggio painting for 30 million euros

Italy has acquired a Caravaggio portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini for €30 million to enhance the collection of the Barberini Museum in Rome.

Italy's recent acquisition of a painting by the master Caravaggio for 30 million euros marks a significant investment in cultural heritage. This artwork, a portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini created when he was about thirty years old, will enrich the collection of the Barberini Museum in Rome. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli emphasized the painting's importance, calling it one of the most significant investments the state has made in art.

Maffeo Barberini, depicted in the painting, later became Pope Urban VIII, serving from 1623 until his death in 1644. His pontificate was marked by notable artistic and cultural endeavors, and this portrait reflects his early years before becoming the pope. The painting's authenticity was confirmed in 1963 by art critic Roberto Longhi, a renowned expert on Caravaggio's work, reinforcing the masterpiece’s value to Italy’s artistic legacy.

This purchase is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening Italy's national cultural heritage, which also includes a recent acquisition of Antonello da Messina's "Ecce Homo." These efforts illustrate the government's commitment to preserving and promoting significant works of art, serving both historical appreciation and cultural tourism in Italy.
