Guerrero reduces intentional homicides by 72% and decreases incidence at the national level

Guerrero has seen a 72% reduction in intentional homicides due to coordinated security strategies, positioning the state 13th nationally in terms of homicide rates.

The state of Guerrero has achieved a significant milestone in reducing intentional homicides, reporting a 72% decrease in the average daily rate from October 2024 to February 2026. Marcela Figueroa, the head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, shared these findings during a press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum. In the latest report for February 2026, Guerrero had an average of 1.86 daily homicides compared to 6.58 in previous months, reflecting the effectiveness of the state’s security strategies.

Furthermore, Guerrero's improved safety statistics have allowed it to climb to the 13th position nationwide in homicide rates, with a total of 52 reported intentional homicides. This is a positive contrast to states like Guanajuato, which recorded 128 victims, highlighting Guerrero's progress in crime reduction. This turnaround is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the various security forces involved in the Coordination Table for Peacebuilding, led by Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, involving federal, state, and municipal agencies.

This substantial drop in homicide rates not only boosts state morale but also impacts wider perceptions of safety in Mexico. The results underline the importance of sustained security initiatives and the potential for other regions to adopt similar cooperative strategies to combat crime effectively. As Guerrero continues to improve, it sets a precedent for other states grappling with high levels of violence, suggesting that coordinated efforts can lead to significant declines in crime rates.
