Heavy rain caused flooding in a daycare center in Itabirito, Brazil, leading children to climb on tables for safety, with all evacuated safely and no injuries reported.

A recent heavy rainstorm hit Itabirito in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, flooding the Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (Cemei) Água Limpa. The flooding rapidly filled classrooms, prompting staff to help children, many as young as five years old, to climb onto tables for safety. Videos shared on social media depict the tense moments as teachers and staff worked to calm the children while water surged around them.

The daycare center is responsible for the care of 96 children, and the swift rise in water levels reached knee-height within minutes, alarming both staff and parents. The local fire department was called in to assist with the evacuation process, ensuring that all children were safely removed from the premises without injury. The municipality reported that there were no casualties among the children, highlighting the efficacy of the emergency response measures.

Following the incident, municipal teams have begun cleaning the facility and will assess any potential structural damage caused by the flooding. As a precautionary measure, classes are expected to be suspended temporarily, ensuring the safety of the children while evaluations and repairs are undertaken. This incident underscores the vulnerability of local infrastructure to severe weather events, prompting discussions on future preventive measures in the region.
